رنگ‌آمیزی تصاویر خاکستری یکی از مسائل مهم در حوزه بازیابی اطلاعات تصویری محسوب میشود. البته میزان موفقیت روش‌های خودکار در این حوزه در برابر عملکرد گرافیست‌ها و ویراستاران تصویر ناچیز بوده است. از‌بین‌رفتن اطلاعات رنگ‌ها و دست‌یابی به قسمت محدودی از اطلاعات اولیه تصاویر، این موضوع را به چالشی منحصربه‌فرد تبدیل میکند؛ چون هدف اصلی در رنگ‌آمیزی تصاویر خاکستری، پیدا‌کردن رنگ اصلی و واقعی تصویر نیست؛ بلکه تلاش بر این است تا نوعی رنگ‌آمیزی که از نظر انسان‌ها «واقعی» به نظر می‌رسد، برای تصویر ارائه شود. در این مقاله سامانه‌ای برای رنگ‌آمیزی تصاویر خاکستری اشخاص و انسان‌ها ارائه شده است. در این سامانه که نیاز به پیش‌پردازش تصاویر یا مؤلفه‌های پردازشی مستقل ندارد، از یک شبکه عصبی عمیق برای رنگ‌آمیزی تصاویر افراد و از شبکه‌ای دیگر برای بررسی بازخورد عملکرد رنگ‌آمیزی استفاده میشود. نتایج حاصل از پژوهش، عملکرد کیفی بهتری را در رنگ‌آمیزی تصاویر افراد در مقایسه با روش‌های مرسوم در این عرصه نشان میدهد که در مدت‌زمان آموزش، به‌مراتب کمتری به‌دست آمده است. کاربرد این سامانه نه‌تنها در رنگ‌آمیزی تصاویر افراد، بلکه در رنگ‌آمیزی پُرتره‌های غیر انسانی و آثار هنری نیز کاربرد دارد و به‌کمک آن میتوان رنگ‌آمیزی مناسبی برای اثرهایی که ممکن است، ساعت‌ها زمان ببرند، در کسری از ثانیه انجام داد.
